Boho braids half updo

Festival season may be drawing to a close but we love a boho braid all year round. So why not keep that summer feeling going a little bit longer and give this messy, braided half updo a try?

Our very own boho queen, Miss Alex, shows you exactly how to take the humble half ponytail to the next level with tumbling waves and sexy boho braids. That’s got to put a smile on your face, even on the rainiest ‘summer’ day!

You’ll need

STEP 1 - Apply your extensions as normal

First up, clip in your extensions as usual. For this look, Alex is using a 20 inch set of wefts in the shade 613.

Section off the top half of your hair and clip it out of the way. Gently backcomb your hair at the bottom of your head so that your wefts have something to grip onto.

Then clip in a four-clip weft, followed by two three-clips wefts above that. This will give your half-down section of hair plenty of oomph.

STEP 2 - Create a V-shaped top section

Next, you want to let down your top section and create a V-shaped section of hair, coming to a point at the crown of your head.

Clip that section of hair out of the way for now.

STEP 3 - Clip in a couple of upside-down wefts

To give your half pony some extra length and volume, grab a couple of two-clip wefts. Flip them over and clip then in upside-down underneath the point of the V-shaped section you just created.

STEP 4 - Create a half ponytail

Let down your top section of hair and gather it up, along with those two-clip wefts you added, to create a half pony at the top of your head. Secure it in place with a hair elastic.

Loosen your pony slightly with your fingers to keep it looking relaxed. Then brush through the tail so it’s lovely and smooth. Looking good!

STEP 5 - Add some braids

Now to add in some texture with those gorgeous boho braids.

Take a small section of your ponytail and braid it right down to the ends. You remember the drill - just split it into three sections, cross the right section under the middle section, then the left section under the middle section, and repeat all the way down.

Create another braid in your ponytail and then scatter a few more through your half-down section. You can make them as thick or thin as you like, it’s totally up to you!

If you’re a braids pro you can mix things up a bit with some fishtail braids or maybe a four-strand braid, but classic braids look just as good.

STEP 6 - And some loose curls

For some extra texture and body, grab your curling wand and add a few loose waves into your let down section of hair.

Just take a section of hair roughly the same width as the barrel of your curling wand, wrap it around, hold for a few seconds and release. Super easy.

STEP 7 - Finishing touches

And that’s just about it! All that’s left to do is to open up those curls a little with your fingers and gently loosen your braids to make them more voluminous.

You can also gently backcomb your hair if you want to add any more volume.

And there you have it. A relaxed look perfect for all you beautiful boho princesses out there!
