How to care for clip-in hair extensions

Why not treat your hair extensions to some well-deserved TLC this week and help keep them in great condition for longer? Not sure where to start? The fabulous Miss Alex is on hand with a great video to show you how to care for your clip-in hair extensions. From washing and drying, to brushing and storing your hair extensions, we’ve got you covered!

You’ll need

Washing and drying

It’s best not to wash and dry your clip-in hair extensions too often to avoid damaging them. When they do need a shampoo, make sure you pick a good quality product with a low pH.

Fill a washbasin with lukewarm water (too hot or you’ll damage your extensions) and place your first weft in the water. Now lather the shampoo up in your hands before gently wiping it down your extensions from the clips to the tips. Whatever you do don’t rub and scrunch the hair together like your washing an old pair of socks – you’ll end up with tangled and damaged extensions!

Repeat the shampooing for all of your wefts, one at a time, and then rinse and re-fill the sink with nice clean water ready for conditioning your extensions. As with the shampoo, it’s best to pick a good quality, deeply conditioning product. Smooth the conditioner gently down each extension like you did with the shampoo, before rinsing it in the water. You can even treat your extensions to a deep conditioning treatment every now and then to keep them extra shiny.

Once you’ve finished shampooing, conditioning and rinsing each one of your clip-in hair extensions, just lie them out flat on a clean towel and wrap the towel up around them into a kind of hair extension sausage roll. Gently squeeze the towel to get rid of any excess water and then leave your extensions lying flat on the towel to dry naturally. If you’re in a big hurry you can blow-dry them, but it’s much better if you can leave them to dry naturally away from direct heat. Make sure your extensions are 100% dry before you store them.

Brushing and Storing

It’s really important to brush your extensions regularly to keep them looking smooth and glossy. A big brushing no-no, however, is to start brushing at the top of the weft next to the clips. All this will do is push the tangles down the length of your extensions, where they’ll tighten into knots along the way. Don’t do it! Instead, start by gently brushing the section of hair at the tips in a downwards motion, then start brushing from the section above, gradually working your way to the top of the hair as it de-tangles.

Once your clip-in hair extensions are looking lovely all clean, dry and brushed, you can store them out of harm’s way. To do this, you need to get your arts and crafts hats on and make yourself a handy ribbon hanger (don’t worry, it’s super easy). Simply wrap a length of ribbon around a coat hanger a few times like Alex has done in the video. Then you can clip each individual extension onto the ribbon so they hang down naturally.

To protect your extensions, take a clean cotton T-shirt (no unbreathable man-made fibres please!) that’s at least as long as your extensions and place it on the hanger over the hair extensions. Then you can just pop the hanger in your wardrobe safe in the knowledge your extensions are going to look amazing next time you need them!
