How to create tight curls using clip-in hair extensions

It’s official, curls are back and they’re big! One of the hottest trends to emerge from London Fashion Week AW16 last year, tight curls bounced their way down the catwalks of top designers, from Topshop to Versace.

This gorgeous curly look is fun and sassy, perfect for styling up or down. Team it with some sparkle to stand out on the dance floor or embrace another key trend of the moment, the ‘70s, and wear it with a colourful kaftan or flares for a cool daytime look. There’s only one rule - the bigger the hair, the better!

Creating these tight curls takes a little bit of know-how, so we asked the lovely Miss Alex to share her secrets and take you through the process step-by-step with another one of her fabulous videos.

So gather up your equipment and let’s get this party started…

Clip in your Lush hair extensions

01.JPG

For this look, it’s best to clip in your hair extensions as you go, rather than applying them all at the start. This helps keep things more manageable! So, first up, create a section of hair low down at the back of your head, clip the rest of your hair out of the way and apply your first weft.

Once you’re clipped in, brush through both your natural hair and your extensions so there are no tangles and you have one nice, smooth section of hair. You’ll be curling this section before applying your next wefts.

If you need a bit more help clipping in your extensions, you can find a super helpful video showing you how to apply clip-in hair extensions on our blog.

Curling…

To create those beautiful tight curls we’re going for in this look, you need to use a very thin barrelled curling wand. Grab your wand, take a thin section of hair about the same width as the wand and wrap your hair around the wand. Make sure you wrap your hair away from your face, as this creates the most flattering look. Take a look at how Alex does it if you’re not sure!

Hold your hair on the wand for just a couple of seconds and release. You should have a fantastic tight spiral curl. Repeat this process until you have curled the entire bottom section of your hair, always making sure the curls flow away from your face. Don’t worry about opening up the curls yet as we will do this to make it more voluminous at the end.

More curling…

Once you have curled your entire bottom section, create a new section above your curled one. Apply your second weft, and brush it through.

Then it’s simply a case of curling this section in exactly the same way as you did before. Repeat this all the way up your head, leaving a good layer of hair at the top of your head to cover your clip-in extensions.

Finally, curl your top layer of natural hair in just the same way, always curling away from your face.

Curling your hair in such thin sections can seem like a big job, but you’ll get so much quicker as you go along. And trust us, the results look so amazing it’s worth the time and effort!

Now give it some volume (yes, even more!)

Once you have curled all of your hair, take your hairbrush and brush through your curls to make them more voluminous. You could also gently use your fingers to open up your curls if you prefer.

Now give it some extra oomph by going in with your comb and backcombing the hair at top of your head. Gently push your comb against the roots to create some serious volume. To finish up, give it a good spritz of hairspray to hold everything in place.

And there you have it girls. Big, bouncy, bang-on-trend curls!
