How to do a high ponytail with hair extensions

Wondering how to get started with your new clip-in hair extensions? Or maybe you want to try something a bit different? Did you know you can use your clip-in hair extensions to create a whole range of gorgeous styles?

We love this high ponytail look, it adds some much-needed extra oomph to an everyday style. And it’s a great natural-looking one to start with if you’re an extensions newbie.

So don’t worry, we’re going to take you through every little step of achieving this look. From sectioning, to clipping your wefts, to a cute finishing touch. The fab Miss Alex is even on hand with her expert video to show you exactly how it’s done.

Let’s get started ladies! First, you’ll need to get all your equipment together.

You’ll need

   Your clip-in hair extensions (obvs!)

A comb with a long, thin tail for sectioning (or a blunt pencil will also do the job)

Some clips or bobbles for securing your sections and your ponytail

A backcombing/teasing brush or fine tooth comb

A hair grip for securing your finishing braid

Once you’ve got everything ready, you can start sectioning.

Sectioning

You’ll need to start dividing your hair into sections from the bottom up, so start by making a section of hair along the nape of your neck with your sectioning comb or pencil.

Then tie or clip the rest of your hair out of the way on top of your head. So far, so good.

Flipping and clipping your wefts

Gently backcomb the roots of your first section with your teasing brush or comb to give your hair extensions something to clip on to. Now take your first weft and comb it out so it’s lovely and smooth. Then flip it over so it’s upside down, and clip it on to your ready-and-waiting section of hair.

You really need to watch Alex demonstrate the flipping part below, we promise it’s way easier than it sounds!

Repeat the sectioning and clipping process up to your crown where your high ponytail will sit. How many extensions you clip in is up to you. But remember, the more you clip, the heavier your ponytail will be. Alex goes for a two clip weft, another two clip, a three clip, another three clip and a final one clip on top of that. And if it works for her…

Backcombing your crown

Take your sectioning comb and make a parting across the crown of your head, just above your final weft.

Then take your teasing brush or comb and push against the roots to backcomb. Warning: you’re going to have crazy hair for a minute! Trust us though, this will help disguise your extensions and create a seamless look.

Creating your ponytail

Now you’re ready to make your ponytail. Gently run your fingers through the backcombed hair and pull your hair back into a high ponytail like you normally would. Then simply tie it in place with a hair bobble.

Grab the front pieces of the ponytail and give them a gentle pull to create some extra height, and do the same with the pieces at the back to secure the bottom of your ponytail.

Finishing touches

To make your high ponytail look soft and natural, just brush out the ponytail hair so it’s nice and shiny, and pull out a couple of wispy strands from around your face to frame it.

Then give Alex’s final finishing touch a try. Grab a strand from the back of your ponytail, braid it and then wrap it around the ponytail bobble and pin it in place with a hair grip.

Congratulations, you’ve just taken the humble high ponytail to the next level!
